The former county town of West Suffolk, Bury St Edmonds has a population of around 35,000 and is renowned for its ruined abbey. An ancient town, Bury St Edmonds was a Saxon royal town and was the burial place of King Edmund in 869AD, a monastery was erected in the town even earlier in 633AD. The town is well known for brewing, the Greene King Brewery is located in the town.
