Watford is a town and district some 19 miles north-west of London, it has a population of around 80,000 and is inside the M-25 motorway. First mentioned in an Anglo Saxon charter of 1007, it remained an agricultural community with some cottage industry until the Industrial Revolution, when both the Grand Union Canal and the London to Birmingham Railway brought wealth and prosperity to the area.
