Situated around 10 miles north-east of the county town, Chelmsford, Braintree is a sizeable town with a population of over 40,000. There is some confusion as to how it got its name as it is thought the River Brain was so named later, and did not give the town its name. Braintree was listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Branchetreu, it was earlier the site of Roman roads and a settlement.
Braintree can be accessed from the A120 and A131.
