The historic county town of Surrey, Guildford is also the largest town in the county with a population of around 70,000. Founded by Saxon settlers in the 5th century at the point of a ford in the River Wey, Guildford was later the home of the Royal Mint.

Named in the Domesday Book (1086) as Geldeford, Guildford was held by William the Conqueror himself. Guildford Castle dates from Saxon times and underwent extensive conservation in 2003.
