A famous university town located in the county of Leicestershire, Loughborough is in fact the second largest town in the county, with a population of around 58,000. Probably originating as a settlement during Saxon times, Loughborough was still just a small village at the time of the Domesday Book.
It became a busy market town during medieval times, but suffered serious setbacks after numerous bouts of the Plague. Loughborough University developed from a small technical institute which was founded in the town in 1909.
Attractions in Loughborough include the Charnwood Museum in Granby Street, the Manor Farm Animal Centre and Donkey Sanctuary in East Leake, the Bellfoundry Museum in Freehold Street, and travel on the Great Western Railway steam trains.
Loughborough can be accessed by way of the M1, the A6 and the A60, it is about 12 miles from Leicester, and a driving distance of 115 miles from London.
