Lying on the River Dearne in South Yorkshire, the large town of Bradford has a population of around 220,000 and was formerly an important town for coal mining and glassmaking. Another town with Anglo-Saxon origins, Barnsley was called Berneslai in the Domesday Book, at that time having a population of 200. Granted the right to hold a weekly market in the 13th century, it was for hundreds of years a bustling market town.
