A large city with a population of over half a million, Sheffield gets its name from the River Sheaf, on the banks of which the city developed. The site of several Iron Age hillforts, Sheffield is a historic place, which developed over many hundreds of years. Sheffield Castle was built after the Norman conquest of Britain, to protect the local populace, and the town held its first market in 1296. The main growth of the city occurred during the Industrial Revolution when it became an important place for the production of steel.
