Peterborough: A Saxon monastery was founded here in 650 AD, and the town grew up around the monastery. The cathedral was built later, but on the same site, and was started in 1118, with further additions in the 13th and 14th centuries. Mary Queen of Scots and Catherine of Aragon were both buried in Peterborough Cathedral, though Mary Queen of Scots was latewr moved to Westminster Abbey.

The city of Peterborough stands on the River Nene, and these days has a population of over 160,000, for ceremonial purposes it is within the county of Cambridgeshire, though it is a unitary authority. Brickmaking has been a major industry for the city.

Peterborough can be reached via the A1(M), the A47, the A15, and the A605, it is about 40 miles from Cambridge, 42 miles from Northampton, and 85 miles from central London.
