Cirencester is one of those towns that somehow manages to feel both elegant and cosy at the same time. Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, it's often referred to as the capital of the region, and for good reason. The honey-coloured buildings, winding lanes and relaxed pace of life give it plenty of charm, while its bustling market square and range of independent shops keep things lively. It's a proper Cotswold gem with a proud local identity and a friendly, laid-back feel.
The history of Cirencester goes all the way back to Roman times, when it was known as Corinium Dobunnorum. It was actually the second-largest town in Roman Britain, right after Londinium. You can still spot signs of that era in the town's layout, and there's a cracking Roman amphitheatre just on the edge of town. Through the medieval and wool trade periods, Cirencester remained a place of note, with its towering parish church—St John the Baptist—still dominating the skyline. These days, the population sits at around 20,000, and it's still got that rare mix of historical depth and modern comfort.
For visitors and locals alike, Cirencester has loads going for it. The Corinium Museum is a must-see, packed with Roman artefacts and a great way to understand the town's past. You've got the Abbey Grounds for a walk and a bit of peace, while Cirencester Park offers miles of scenic green space, part of the Bathurst Estate. There's a proper market held regularly in the square, and in the surrounding area you've got places like Lodge Park and Chedworth Roman Villa, both run by the National Trust, and steeped in history. Westonbirt Arboretum and the picturesque village of Bibury are also a short drive away and always worth the trip.
Wider Gloucestershire really spoils you for choice. Cheltenham is just up the road with its regency buildings and lively festivals, from literature and jazz to science and racing. Gloucester itself has a beautiful cathedral and historic docks that make a good day out. And then of course there's the rest of the Cotswolds—villages like Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Painswick all ooze charm and character. Whether it's walks, history, art or just a good country pub you're after, Gloucestershire delivers.
Cirencester isn't on a main train line, but Kemble station is just a short drive away and links directly to London Paddington and Swindon. If you're driving, the A417 and A429 connect you up to the M4 and M5 with ease. Local buses run to Swindon, Cheltenham and other towns nearby, and it's pretty easy to get about on foot or by bike in town. For air travel, Bristol Airport and Birmingham Airport are both within reach—Bristol being slightly closer, roughly an hour away depending on traffic.
Gloucestershire as a county is a bit of a patchwork—mixing rolling countryside with vibrant market towns and hidden hamlets. It's the kind of place where you can go from a winding hill lane to a packed street market in ten minutes. There's a lot of pride here, from cider makers to craftspeople, and you feel that in every town and village. It's got its own pace, its own flavour, and you never quite run out of places to explore.
We hope you found this Cirencester tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
