West Sussex is a county that wraps together rolling countryside, historic towns, and a cracking stretch of coastline. It's got a bit of everything really—seaside charm, market town bustle, and miles of greenery in between. From the South Downs to the shores of Bognor and Littlehampton, there's a relaxed, lived-in feel to the place. It's the sort of county where you can go for a windswept cliff walk in the morning and still be back in time for a pint in a cosy pub by late afternoon.
The history of West Sussex runs deep. It's been home to Romans, Saxons, Normans—you name it, they've left their mark. Chichester still shows off its Roman street plan and ancient walls, and Arundel Castle stands proud as a reminder of medieval muscle. Over the years, the county grew up around farming, coastal trade, and later the railways, which brought Victorian holidaymakers flocking to the seaside. There's still that sense of heritage tucked into every corner, from old flint cottages to grand cathedrals and manor houses.
When it comes to things to see and do, West Sussex isn't short of options. Arundel is always a favourite with its fairytale castle and riverside walks, while Worthing and Bognor Regis offer traditional seaside fun with fish and chips and deckchairs. Chichester's galleries and theatres draw a cultured crowd, and the South Downs National Park offers trails, views, and fresh air in spades. Then there are the vineyards, golf courses, quirky museums, gardens, and regular food festivals that pop up through the year. It's a proper all-rounder.
Outside the county, you're still spoilt for choice. Brighton's not far, with all its colour and chaos, while Hampshire offers New Forest peace and Winchester's historic charm. To the north you're edging into Surrey, full of leafy villages and countryside escapes. And London's always an option for a day trip if you fancy a change of pace. Being on the south coast, you're never far from a good beach or a quick ferry across the Channel either.
Getting around West Sussex is relatively easy. The A27 runs east to west, linking most of the major towns, and the A24 and A23 shoot north towards London. The rail network's solid too, with direct trains into London Victoria, Gatwick Airport, Brighton, and Portsmouth. Gatwick is the main airport nearby—quick to reach and well connected for longer hauls. Local buses serve towns and villages, and there's no shortage of walking and cycling routes for those who prefer to take their time.
