West Wittering is one of the better known coastal settlements in West Sussex and is famed for a long stretch of a sandy beach, its large dunes and its relaxing seaside way of life drawing people back time and time again! With roots dating back to Saxon times, the village has remained a farming and fishing village through history until it became a well-known holiday destination during the 1900s. The current population is about 2,700 people, but when the sun is shining at the weekends, it feels like the village is bursting at the seams with surfers, walkers and families going to the coast. The beaches at West Wittering and East Head are the main attractions and there is an abundance of opportunities for sailing, paddleboarding and long walks along the coastline.
The A286 is the principal road access into the village through Chichester, while there are also trains connecting Chichester to London, Brighton and Portsmouth. National Trust owned East Head is a major draw for nature lovers, while visitors from English Heritage often visit nearby Boxgrove Priory and the city of Chichester with its historical cathedral. It is the type of place where flip flops, wetsuits and fish and chips seem like a normal part of life!
