The town of Selsey is situated at the southernmost point of the Manhood Peninsula in West Sussex, and has a distinctly weathered seaside character that is still very much connected to its roots in the fishing industry. Selsey developed from a small Saxon colony and was once part of the first cathedral to be built in Sussex before the location for the bishopric changed to Chichester many hundreds of years ago. Approximately 11,000 people currently reside in Selsey, which creates a lively atmosphere year round, while maintaining its coastal village feel. Crab fishing continues to be a part of local culture and there are many ways that the mariner presence is maintained, including a lifeboat station, a promenade along the beach, and a number of shingle beaches. In order to get to Selsey, the main route is via the A286 from Chichester, and the village is connected to neighbouring villages by buses, while there are also train services from Chichester station. Nature lovers will often spend time exploring Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve, while many people flock to the nearby National Trust attractions of East Head, Uppark House and Harting Down. Popular attractions managed by English Heritage in the region include the Boxgrove Priory, and the historic city walls and cathedral in Chichester.
