Between Worthing and Lancing you will find Sompting with its historic village character combined with more recent suburban residential areas, located just inland from the coast and adjacent to the South Downs. It has an extensive common property history dating back to Saxon times, while St Mary's Church with its unique Rhenish helm tower provides something of a European-style landmark within the village community. Approximately 9,000 people are currently living in Sompting and despite continuing expansion of the surrounding area, it has maintained a very quiet community atmosphere. Access to the A27 and adjacent A259 provides straightforward access around the area and rail services from Lancing Station connect Sompting with Brighton, Portsmouth and London. The South Downs National Park attracts walkers and cyclists with Cissbury Ring and Devil's Dyke both situated a short distance from Sompting. Other National Trust sites close to Sompting include Saddlescombe Farm and Nymans, and sites that are part of English Heritage such as Bramber Castle and Cissbury Ring (an ancient hill fort).
