Worthing is a lively seaside town on the south coast of West Sussex, known for its wide promenade, pebble beach and friendly, no-fuss atmosphere. It's a bit more low-key than some of its coastal neighbours, but that's part of the appeal. There's a relaxed rhythm to the place—families out for ice cream, dog walkers on the beach, and pensioners in the cafés all rubbing shoulders with creatives and commuters who've drifted down from the city.

Historically, Worthing was a sleepy fishing hamlet that blossomed into a fashionable resort in the late 18th and 19th centuries, thanks in part to its clean sea air and the royal seal of approval from Princess Amelia, daughter of George III. The arrival of the railway turned it into a proper Victorian destination, and you can still see much of that legacy in the architecture. Over time, it's evolved into a solidly residential town with a good mix of heritage and progress.

There's no shortage of things to do in town. You've got the grand old Worthing Pier—winner of a few national awards—and the Pavilion Theatre, which regularly hosts everything from comedy to classical music. Art lovers head to the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, while others just enjoy wandering through the town's leafy parks and gardens. The seafront is dotted with cafés, amusements and deckchairs in the warmer months, and there are shops galore from big names to independents. It's the kind of place where you can easily fill an afternoon just pottering about.

In the wider West Sussex area, there's plenty to see and explore. Arundel's just up the road with its grand castle and riverside charm, while the South Downs National Park provides some cracking views and walking routes. Head east and you'll hit Brighton with all its colour and chaos; westwards, Chichester offers a more genteel day out with Roman walls, a cathedral, and boutique shopping. There are beaches, vineyards, country pubs and historic villages all scattered across the county, so you're never short on options.

Worthing's well connected, making it a popular base for commuters and weekenders alike. The main train line runs along the coast and into London Victoria or London Bridge in under two hours. The A27 and A24 connect the town easily to Brighton, Chichester, and beyond. If you're flying in, Gatwick Airport is just under an hour away by car or train. Local buses and cycle routes make it easy to get around without too much faff.

West Sussex is a county with a bit of everything—coastline, countryside, market towns, and even a few hidden gems. It's less brash than some parts of the south coast, but what it lacks in showiness, it more than makes up for in quality of life. People are proud of where they live, and you'll find a strong sense of local identity whether you're by the sea or tucked away in a village near the Downs.
