Worcestershire rolls gently through the West Midlands, a county full of lush countryside, winding rivers and market towns with bags of character. You've got the Malvern Hills rising up like old sentries on one side, while the River Severn quietly makes its way through the heart of it all. It's a place where you can take your time — whether you're wandering through orchards, strolling along the canals, or stopping off for a proper pint in a country pub. While it's got its share of modern life, Worcestershire still keeps plenty of its old-world charm.
The county's been around for a long time. Worcester itself was an important city way back in Roman and Saxon times, later becoming one of the key battlegrounds of the English Civil War. Worcestershire's also known for its farming, market gardening and fruit growing, with the Vale of Evesham famous for its orchards and asparagus. The county played a big part in the industrial revolution too, with glove making, porcelain and of course, Lea & Perrins Worcester Sauce putting it firmly on the map. These days, around 600,000 people call Worcestershire home, spread out across its towns, villages and rural communities.
There's no shortage of places to visit. The Malvern Hills pull walkers, cyclists and anyone who enjoys a good view, while the spa town of Great Malvern offers its historic priory and Victorian charm. Worcester Cathedral stands tall above the river, packed with centuries of history. The National Trust looks after places like Croome Court and Hanbury Hall, both full of grand gardens and stately homes. English Heritage's Witley Court gives you dramatic ruins and beautiful grounds to explore. The Severn Valley Railway offers steam train journeys through stunning countryside, while the West Midland Safari Park near Bewdley is always a family favourite. In springtime, the blossom trails across the Vale of Evesham are well worth a visit.
Look a bit further across Worcestershire's neighbours and you've got even more at your fingertips. The Cotswolds sit just to the south-east, Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon isn't far, and Birmingham's close by for shopping, nightlife and culture. You're never far from something new to explore, whether it's stately homes, quiet villages or bustling towns.
Getting around Worcestershire is pretty straightforward. The M5 motorway runs right through the county, giving quick access north to Birmingham and south towards Bristol and the South West. The M42 and M50 link in easily too. Worcester, Malvern, Kidderminster and Evesham all have train stations with direct services to Birmingham, London and further afield. Birmingham Airport is less than an hour away by car, with flights heading all over the place. The county's well served by buses and plenty of scenic country lanes if you fancy taking the slower route.
Worcestershire has a nice balance to it — you've got busy market towns, picture-postcard villages, rolling hills, riverside walks and plenty of history packed into one small patch of England. It manages to feel peaceful without being cut off, traditional without feeling stuck in the past, and always has a warm welcome waiting.
