Malvern rests snug against the side of the Malvern Hills, where the landscape rolls up into dramatic peaks and falls away into peaceful valleys. It's one of those places that feels like it's been built to make the most of the scenery, with views that seem to go on forever. The town itself has a relaxed, old-world charm, full of grand Victorian buildings, neat streets, and little pockets of independent shops and cafés. There's a real mix of walkers, locals, visitors and those who've made it their home for the fresh air and the slower pace of life.
The history of Malvern goes hand-in-hand with its springs. Long before it became famous, it was a small village focused around the priory. By the 19th century, the discovery of its pure spring water gave rise to the Malvern water cure, attracting wealthy visitors from across the country. The town expanded quickly during the Victorian era, with elegant hotels, bath houses and villas springing up across the hillside. Malvern also played a part in the world of radar research during the Second World War. These days, Malvern has a population of around 30,000 and blends its spa town heritage with thriving technology businesses, schools and tourism.
There's plenty to see and do in and around the town. The Malvern Hills are the obvious draw, with walking trails leading straight up into the hills from the town centre. The views from the top stretch across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and into Wales on a clear day. Great Malvern Priory, with its stunning medieval architecture and beautiful stained glass, stands at the heart of the town. The Malvern Theatres offer a packed schedule of plays, concerts and films. A short drive brings you to the National Trust's Croome Court, with its parkland and grand house, while English Heritage's Witley Court offers atmospheric ruins and beautiful grounds. Eastnor Castle, just across the border in Herefordshire, is another nearby gem.
The wider Worcestershire area adds even more. Worcester offers its riverside cathedral, The Commandery and museums. Evesham brings riverside walks and spring blossom, while Pershore's market town charm and orchards sit along the Avon. Bewdley and Stourport offer days out by the river, boat trips, parks and old-world streets. Kidderminster brings the Severn Valley Railway with its steam trains winding through stunning countryside. The county is packed with gardens, parks and plenty of quiet villages to explore.
Malvern's easy enough to reach. The A449 runs through the town, linking to Worcester and Ledbury, while the M5 isn't far for longer journeys. Great Malvern and Malvern Link both have railway stations, with regular services into Worcester, Birmingham and further afield. Buses serve the surrounding towns and villages well. Birmingham Airport sits about an hour away by car or train, offering flights to a good mix of UK and international destinations.
Worcestershire as a county manages to feel both busy and peaceful at the same time. You've got rich farmland, lively market towns, the backbone of the Malvern Hills, and plenty of history packed into its borders. From world-famous sauce to thriving businesses, from medieval churches to steam trains, Worcestershire brings together old and new in a way that feels very natural. And wherever you end up, that calm, friendly atmosphere runs right through it.
