Bewdley sits right on the edge of the River Severn, where the old Georgian buildings line the banks and the narrow streets gently wind their way uphill. It's got that classic small-town charm — the sort of place where you can grab a coffee, sit by the river and watch the world go by without feeling like you need to rush anywhere. The town centre's packed with independent shops, cafés and pubs, while the river, woods and countryside are always just a short walk away.
The history of Bewdley stretches back to medieval times, but it really came into its own during the 17th and 18th centuries, thriving as a busy inland port. The River Severn was a major trade route, bringing in goods like timber, salt, coal and iron, while the town's boat-building, tanning and glove-making industries flourished. Its name actually comes from Beaulieu meaning beautiful place — and that still fits today. Over time, the river trade declined, but Bewdley settled comfortably into life as a market town and visitor destination. These days, it's home to around 10,000 people who enjoy that mix of riverside living and countryside on their doorstep.
There's plenty to keep you busy right in town. Bewdley Museum, tucked behind Load Street, tells the story of the town's trades and crafts and often hosts events, workshops and markets. The riverside offers lovely walks, boat trips and plenty of places to stop for food and drink. Just a few minutes away you've got the Wyre Forest — one of the largest ancient woodlands in England, perfect for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting. The Severn Valley Railway starts just up the road in Kidderminster, running steam trains through the beautiful Severn Valley. Further out, you've got National Trust's Hanbury Hall and Croome Court for grand houses and gardens, and English Heritage's Witley Court with its dramatic fountains and ruins.
Elsewhere in Worcestershire, there's always more to explore. Worcester has its riverside cathedral, museums and busy shopping streets. The Malvern Hills pull walkers with those sweeping views across the countryside. Stourport-on-Severn, just downstream, offers a bit of seaside charm with its fairground, canals and boat trips. Kidderminster gives you the start of the Severn Valley Railway and plenty of shops and restaurants, while Pershore and Evesham bring peaceful market town vibes with blossom trails and riverside walks.
Getting to Bewdley's fairly simple. The A456 connects the town to Kidderminster and Birmingham in one direction, and the wider Worcestershire countryside the other way. The nearest train station is in Kidderminster, just a few miles away, with direct rail links to Birmingham and Worcester. Buses serve Bewdley from Kidderminster and the surrounding villages. For flights, Birmingham Airport sits around an hour away by car, offering plenty of UK and international routes.
Worcestershire has that brilliant balance — you've got towns full of history, open countryside, rolling farmland, hills, rivers and busy market centres all sitting comfortably side by side. Whether it's walking along the Malverns, visiting cathedrals and abbeys, or simply sitting by a riverside pub, the county offers a bit of everything. And through it all, there's always that laid-back, welcoming feel that makes people want to stick around.
