A mostly rural county located in south-west England, Dorset has a population of around 710,000 (including Poole and Bournemouth), and an area of 981 square miles.

A county which is popular with tourists, Dorset features the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which includes many well known locations such as Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Chesil Beach.

Dorset's history goes back some 10,000 years when early Mesolithic hunters established settlements along the coast. This area is rich in Neolithic and Bronze Age burial mounds and also features a number of Iron Age hillforts, such as Maiden Castle, which dates from around 600BC.

The main Roman settlement in Dorset was Dorchester, later Saxon settlements roughly correspond to present day towns and villages, the current parishes are little changed since recorded in the Domesday Book.

Swanage - A popular seaside resort to the east of Weymouth, Swanage was formerly a fishing town and was also significant for quarrying. It reached its popularity as a seaside holiday resort in the 1950's to 1970's. Swanage Map.
