Wareham is a small market town with a big sense of history, sitting neatly between the River Frome and River Piddle, right at the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck. It's the sort of place where you can stroll along the old town walls, grab an ice cream by the quay, and still feel like you've stepped back in time. There's a real charm to it - quiet, friendly, and just the right mix of old and new.
This town's been around for a long while. It dates back over a thousand years and was once a major Saxon stronghold. The earth ramparts that still wrap around the town are a reminder of its defensive past. Wareham's position by the river made it an important port in medieval times, and it saw its fair share of drama, from Viking raids to civil war. Despite a few fires and a fair bit of rebuilding over the centuries, the town's layout and character have stuck, with plenty of old buildings still lining the streets.
There's more than enough going on in town to keep visitors happy. You've got a mix of independent shops, pubs with bags of character, and cafés where you can watch the world go by. The quay's a bit of a hub, with boat trips running along the river and a cracking view at sunset. The Wareham Town Museum gives you a feel for the area's long past, and if you're after something a bit different, there's even a small cinema in an old chapel. There are parks, nature reserves, and walking routes all within easy reach, so it's great for stretching the legs.
You're well placed for exploring the rest of Dorset too. A short drive takes you to Corfe Castle, with its crumbling ruins and sweeping views. Studland and Swanage are nearby for beach days, and the Purbeck Hills are perfect for hiking. Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door aren't far either - just right for a coastal adventure. Head inland and you've got places like Dorchester and Blandford to explore, full of history, shops and local food.
Wareham's easy enough to get to, whether you're driving or hopping on public transport. The town has its own train station with direct services to Poole, Bournemouth, and all the way to London Waterloo. The A351 runs right through town, linking up with the A35 and making it a handy spot to base yourself. Buses connect to local villages and coastal spots, and for flights, Bournemouth Airport is the nearest - just under an hour's drive. Once you're in town, most places are an easy walk, with plenty of riverside paths and hidden corners to discover.
Dorset itself is one of those places that seems to do it all without much fuss. You've got ancient landscapes, craggy coastlines, and countryside that goes on for miles. It's packed with character, from its thatched cottages and winding lanes to its food markets and coastal towns. It's not showy, and that's what makes it so easy to fall in love with. Whether you're into history, walking, wildlife or just a slower way of life, Dorset tends to tick all the right boxes.
