West Bay is a proper gem on Dorset's Jurassic Coast, known for its golden cliffs, shingle beaches, and that laid-back seaside feel that just hits right. It's a small harbour town that's managed to keep its charm, even with a steady stream of visitors rolling in. Whether you're in it for fish and chips by the sea, a walk along the clifftops, or just a good old paddle with the family, it's the kind of place where you can slow down and soak it all in.

This stretch of coast has been drawing people in for centuries. West Bay started life as the harbour for Bridport, built to serve the rope and net-making industry that was big in the area. The harbour was expanded in the 19th century and has seen its fair share of fishermen, traders, and more recently, film crews - thanks to a certain TV series that put the cliffs front and centre. Through all of that, it's stayed true to its roots, with the working harbour still ticking along alongside the tourist bits.

There's plenty to keep you busy once you're here. The beach itself is split in two - East Beach is backed by those famous sandstone cliffs, while West Beach is a bit more sheltered, perfect for families. The harbour's the heart of the action, lined with kiosks, cafés, and fish stalls serving up the day's catch. You'll find boat trips, paddleboarding and mackerel fishing on offer, and the local art gallery and visitor centre are worth a look too. Parking's decent, and everything's close enough to stroll without breaking a sweat.

You don't have to go far to find more to see. Bridport's just inland, with its quirky shops, twice-weekly market and lively arts scene. Further along the coast, Lyme Regis brings in the fossil hunters, while Charmouth is great for a quieter day at the beach. Inland, places like Beaminster and Powerstock offer scenic walks and good food. And if you've got the legs for it, the South West Coast Path gives you clifftop views that'll knock your socks off.

Getting to West Bay's fairly straightforward by car, with the A35 bringing you in from Dorchester or Axminster. Bridport's just a couple of miles up the road and has the main bus connections if you're coming by public transport. There's no train station in town, but both Dorchester and Axminster are on main lines and not too far by taxi or bus. If you're flying in, Exeter Airport is your best bet, just over an hour's drive away. Once you're here, it's easy to get around on foot, and everything's close to the shoreline.

Dorset as a county is one of those places that doesn't need to shout about itself. It's got rolling hills, ancient tracks, and some of the best coastline in the country. You've got market towns, farm shops, bluebell woods and miles of walking trails, all dotted between peaceful villages and seaside spots. Whether you're after adventure or just a slower pace, Dorset serves it up without fuss. It's a place where life feels a bit simpler, in the best kind of way.
