Lulworth Cove is one of those places that really sticks in the mind - like a little pocket of paradise carved into the Dorset coast. It's a perfect horseshoe-shaped bay, tucked between steep cliffs and rolling green hills, where the sea laps gently onto white pebbles. The water's incredibly clear, the scenery's something out of a postcard, and it's no surprise it draws visitors all year round. Whether you're after a bit of exploring or just a quiet sit by the sea, it's a spot that does both beautifully.

The cove itself was formed around 10,000 years ago, shaped by the power of the sea pushing through layers of rock over time. It's a textbook example of coastal erosion, which is why school trips and geology buffs often end up here with notepads in hand. The nearby village of West Lulworth has been around since at least the Domesday Book, and it's always been a place where fishing, farming and smuggling stories have mixed together. As seaside tourism took off in the 20th century, Lulworth quietly grew into one of Dorset's must-see spots.

Today, there's plenty to keep visitors busy without feeling too built-up. You've got the visitor centre, which gives a good intro to the geology and local wildlife. There are a couple of cafés and pubs nearby, plus shops for picking up snacks or beach bits. If you fancy stretching your legs, the coast path leads over the cliffs to Durdle Door - a natural limestone arch that's just as striking as the cove itself. Kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming are popular in the calmer months, and there's always someone trying to skim a stone across the water.

The wider Dorset area is packed with places worth exploring. Head east and you're into the Isle of Purbeck, with its castles, heathland and quiet beaches. Corfe Castle is a bit of a showstopper, standing proud on a hilltop with views for miles. Further west, the Jurassic Coast continues past Weymouth and on to Lyme Regis, famous for fossils and seaside charm. Inland, towns like Dorchester and Blandford offer markets, museums and a slower pace for when the coast gets too breezy.

Getting to Lulworth Cove takes a bit of planning, but it's worth the effort. The nearest train stations are Wool and Wareham, both on the main line from London Waterloo to Weymouth. From there, you can grab a local taxi or hop on a bus - though services can be patchy, especially out of season. By car, it's a straightforward drive from the A352 or A35, with parking near the visitor centre. Bournemouth Airport is the nearest for flights, and that's just over an hour away by road. Once you're there, it's all best seen on foot, so comfy shoes come in handy.

Dorset itself is a county that's hard not to love. It's got the lot - dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, rolling hills, proper countryside pubs and some of the best walking routes you'll find in the UK. It's not flashy or overdone, and that's what makes it so appealing. There's space to breathe, places to wander, and a sense that you're never far from a good view or a quiet corner. Whether you're staying by the coast or exploring inland, it's got something for everyone who likes things a little more down to earth.
