Poole is a lively coastal town in Dorset, best known for its enormous natural harbour, long sandy beaches and mix of old-world charm and modern living. It’s the kind of place where you can hop on a boat one minute and be sitting at a waterfront café the next. With its working port, smart marinas, historic old town and family-friendly seafront, Poole brings together all the best bits of coastal life without trying too hard.

The town has a rich seafaring past. It really started to make a name for itself in medieval times as a port shipping wool, and later as a key player in the Newfoundland cod trade. Poole’s deep harbour made it ideal for big ships, and by the 18th century it was booming. The old town, with its cobbled streets and Georgian buildings, is a nod to that golden era. During the Second World War, Poole played its part in the D-Day landings, and it's carried on evolving ever since—now blending maritime heritage with tourism, industry and a healthy dose of sunshine.

There’s loads to do in town. The quay is a top spot, lined with pubs, restaurants and boats of all shapes and sizes, from fishing vessels to flashy yachts. The Poole Museum gives a good rundown of the town’s history, and the RNLI headquarters is right here too, with a visitor centre for those curious about lifeboats and coastal rescue. Sandbanks Beach, just around the corner, is famous for its soft sand and is often ranked as one of the best in the UK. The Dolphin Centre covers the shopping side of things, and you’ll find parks, theatres and boat trips to Brownsea Island, which is a real favourite with families and wildlife lovers.

Step outside of Poole and Dorset really opens up. Bournemouth’s just next door, with its lively pier and packed beach, while the Purbeck Hills roll out to the west, leading to Corfe Castle and the wild beauty of Studland Bay. Further along the Jurassic Coast you’ll find iconic spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, and inland there’s the New Forest, full of ponies, woodland walks and cosy pubs. Whether you’re into nature, history or just a good coastal view, it’s all within easy reach.

Getting to Poole is pretty straightforward. The town’s got a mainline train station with direct services to London Waterloo, as well as links across the South Coast. By road, the A35 runs through town, joining up with the A31 and M27 for longer journeys. Ferries still run from Poole to the Channel Islands and France, and local buses cover most of the surrounding area. Bournemouth Airport is the closest for flights—around 20 minutes by car—so it’s well placed whether you’re arriving by land, sea or air.

Dorset as a county is a real mix of coast, countryside and character. It’s got some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the country, along with sleepy villages, lively towns and rolling farmland. There’s a strong connection to the land and sea here, with a slower pace of life and a real pride in local produce, heritage and nature. It’s not a place that shouts about itself—but that’s part of the charm. It’s easy to explore, hard to leave, and full of little surprises.
