Studland is one of those places that feels like it's been plucked from a postcard—tucked away on Dorset's Isle of Purbeck, it's a peaceful seaside village with wide, sandy beaches, heathland walks, and just enough life to keep things interesting. It's the sort of place where time slows down a little, with cosy pubs, quiet lanes, and the sound of the sea never too far off. It's popular with families in the summer and walkers all year round, but never feels overdone. If you're after sea air and space to breathe, it's the perfect little escape.
The village has deep historical roots, with records dating back to Saxon times, and it played a strategic role during the Second World War as a training ground for D-Day troops. Reminders of that period still dot the coastline, with wartime bunkers and memorials hidden among the dunes. The population's small—around 400 or so—which gives the village its intimate, community-focused feel. Over the years, it's remained relatively unchanged, thanks in large part to the National Trust, which looks after much of the surrounding landscape, keeping development in check and nature in the spotlight.
The beach is the big draw, stretching for miles along the coastline, with soft sands, calm waters, and views across to Old Harry Rocks. There's a naturist area tucked further along, and plenty of space for swimming, paddling or simply watching the boats drift past. Studland Bay is managed by the National Trust, and the nearby heathland is a haven for rare birds, wildflowers and all sorts of wildlife. You can hire paddleboards, go for a horse ride along the beach, or simply settle in at one of the local cafés. The Pig on the Beach is a popular stop, with good food and even better views. A short walk or drive brings you to the ruins of Corfe Castle, one of English Heritage's finest, perched dramatically on its hill. Brownsea Island's not far either—catch a ferry from nearby Poole and explore the wildlife and woodland trails.
Wider Dorset's packed with options if you fancy exploring a bit more. The Jurassic Coast is right on the doorstep, with places like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door offering up dramatic views and photo-worthy hikes. Head towards Swanage for a classic seaside experience, complete with fish and chips on the pier and a vintage steam train that'll take you right to Corfe Castle. Inland, there's countryside dotted with market towns, stone villages and more walking trails than you can shake a stick at. Dorset's rich in history, full of natural beauty, and always has something tucked just out of sight, waiting to be discovered.
Getting to Studland feels like part of the adventure. You can take the chain ferry across from Sandbanks, which is a lovely way to arrive, or drive the scenic route through Corfe and across the heath. The nearest train station is at Wareham, with links to London and the south coast, and there are local buses running to and from Swanage. Bournemouth Airport is your closest option if you're flying in, and it's about an hour away by car. Once you're in the village, it's all easily walkable, and the coastal paths connect you to some of the best scenery in the area.
Dorset itself is the sort of county that quietly wins people over. There's something for everyone—rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, bustling market towns and peaceful villages like Studland that seem to have dodged the rush of modern life. The Jurassic Coast gives it world heritage status, and the local food scene has taken off too, with farm shops, seafood stalls and independent restaurants dotted around the countryside. It's not a place for big cities or fast living, but if you're after quality of life, it's hard to beat.
We hope you found this Studland tourist map useful for your visit to the Studland Bay area.
