Ferndown is a leafy, well-kept town in East Dorset, sitting just north of Bournemouth and close to the border with Hampshire. It’s known for being peaceful and residential, with wide tree-lined streets, green spaces, and a slower pace of life that suits families and retirees alike. There's a strong sense of community, a tidy town centre, and easy access to both coast and countryside, which makes it a popular place to settle as well as a handy base for exploring the area.
The town hasn’t always looked the way it does today. For much of its early life, Ferndown was a small heathland settlement, with sandy soil, gorse and, unsurprisingly, plenty of ferns. It started to grow in the early 20th century, with housing estates and roads gradually taking shape as people looked to escape the busier coastal towns. Its real growth came post-war, when it developed into a proper town with its own identity. Though it doesn’t shout about its history, there are still little nods to its past in the older parts of town and the surrounding heathland.
Ferndown has all the essentials, and then some. The town centre has a good mix of shops, supermarkets, cafés and pubs, plus a library and community centre that keeps things ticking over. The Barrington Centre offers theatre, films and local events, while the nearby leisure centre and golf courses draw in the active crowd. King George’s Field is a popular spot for walks, picnics and sports, and the surrounding nature reserves are great for a bit of peace and fresh air. It’s not flashy, but it’s got everything you need in easy reach.
If you’re up for a bit of exploring, you’re in a great spot. Bournemouth’s beaches are just a short drive away, and the New Forest isn’t far either—perfect for woodland walks, cycling or spotting ponies. Wimborne Minster is nearby, full of history, cafés and riverside charm, and Ringwood’s not far across the county line for markets and a mooch around the shops. To the west, you’ll start to hit more of Dorset’s iconic landscapes, with the Purbeck Hills, Lulworth Cove and Corfe Castle all doable as a day out.
Getting to Ferndown is fairly easy. It’s just off the A31, which links up with the M27 for routes towards Southampton and London. The nearest train stations are in Bournemouth and Poole, both offering regular services to London and beyond. Local buses serve the town well, and the airport at Bournemouth is only about ten minutes away by car, so it’s a handy option for domestic and short-haul flights. Once you're here, most things are either walkable or a short drive, and parking’s usually not a hassle.
Dorset, as a county, has a way of getting under your skin. It’s got that proper mix of coast, countryside and character—never too busy, never too dull. From the rolling chalk hills to the fossil-strewn beaches, it’s a place that makes space for both quiet moments and big adventures. People here still nod to each other in the street, food tends to be local and seasonal, and time seems to stretch a little further. Whether you’re tucked into a village or right by the sea, Dorset’s the sort of place that just works.
