Christchurch is a charming riverside town tucked into the eastern edge of Dorset, where the rivers Avon and Stour meet before spilling out into Christchurch Harbour. It’s got that classic mix of seaside calm and old-town character, with plenty of cafés, cosy pubs, and independent shops dotted along narrow streets. There’s a relaxed pace here, whether you’re wandering along the quay or enjoying a cream tea with a view. It’s a bit of a hidden gem—close enough to bigger towns, yet with a personality all its own.

The town’s roots stretch back to Saxon times, and it was originally known as Twynham. It became Christchurch after the founding of its magnificent priory, which still dominates the town’s skyline and remains the longest parish church in the country. Thanks to its position on the coast and along key rivers, Christchurch played a part in everything from medieval trade to WWII defence. Smugglers and salt workers once thrived here too, and that sense of layered history still lingers in the buildings and backstreets.

There’s plenty to see and do without leaving town. The Priory is a must-visit, with its stunning architecture and peaceful grounds. Down by the quay, you’ll find boat hire, cafés, and a lovely spot to watch the swans glide by. There’s a weekly market, a museum in the old town hall, and a theatre offering a bit of live entertainment. For families, nearby Mudeford Quay is always a hit, whether you're crabbing, hopping on the ferry, or just enjoying the view with fish and chips in hand. And when the sun’s out, the beaches at Avon and Friars Cliff are just the ticket.

Venture a bit further and Dorset starts to really show off. You’re on the edge of the New Forest, with its wild ponies, walking trails and sleepy villages. Bournemouth’s right next door with its sandy beaches and buzzing seafront, while the Purbeck Hills stretch west towards Swanage, Corfe Castle and beyond. There’s also Hengistbury Head just across the water—perfect for a walk with sweeping sea views. Whether you’re into nature, heritage or just a change of pace, there’s no shortage of day trips.

Christchurch is easy to get to. The town has its own railway station on the main line between Weymouth and London Waterloo, with trains running regularly. The A35 and A338 connect the town to the rest of Dorset and Hampshire by road, and there are good local bus services too. Bournemouth Airport is practically on the doorstep—just fifteen minutes away by car—so flying in or out is a breeze. Once you're in town, most things are within walking distance, and the ferry across to Mudeford Sandbank is a fun little extra.

Dorset as a whole has a way of drawing you in without making a fuss. It’s a county full of character—rolling hills, winding lanes, seaside towns, and that iconic stretch of Jurassic Coast. There’s a real sense of space, of life being lived at a gentler rhythm, and a strong connection to both land and sea. Whether you’re hunting fossils, hiking trails, or just settling into a pub with a local pint, it’s a place that knows how to make people feel at home without needing to shout about it.
