Kidderminster sits not far from the edge of the Wyre Forest, with the River Stour winding its way quietly through town. It's one of those places that's seen plenty of change over the years, yet still carries the marks of its industrial past alongside the shopping centres, retail parks and housing estates that make up the town today. You've got green spaces just a stone's throw away, plenty of places to eat and shop, and good links to pretty much everywhere, which makes it a popular spot for both locals and commuters.
Kidderminster's history is tied tightly to one industry — carpets. From the 18th century onwards, the town became world-famous for carpet manufacturing, with dozens of mills producing woven and tufted carpets that were exported across the globe. Before that, it was a small market town with roots stretching back to medieval times. The arrival of the canal and railways helped the carpet trade boom, providing jobs for thousands of people. Though large-scale carpet production has mostly gone, you'll still see reminders of it all over town. These days, Kidderminster has a population of around 57,000 and serves as a busy hub for north Worcestershire.
There's plenty to see and do in and around Kidderminster. The Severn Valley Railway is one of the town's star attractions, running steam trains along the scenic Severn Valley all the way to Bridgnorth — always a favourite for both visitors and locals. The town centre has a good mix of shops, cafes, and entertainment, while the Museum of Carpet tells the story of Kidderminster's most famous trade. Just outside town, the National Trust's Bodenham Arboretum offers beautiful walking trails through woods and around lakes. Not far away, English Heritage's Witley Court stands with its dramatic ruins and impressive fountains, while the Wyre Forest offers endless trails, bike routes and nature walks.
Elsewhere in Worcestershire, there's no shortage of things to explore. Worcester gives you its grand cathedral, the River Severn, The Commandery and plenty of shopping and nightlife. The Malvern Hills pull in walkers all year round with breathtaking views. Bewdley offers Georgian streets and riverside pubs, while Stourport-on-Severn is perfect for boat trips and family days out by the canal basins. Head further out to Evesham and Pershore for market town charm and fruit-filled orchards in the Vale.
Getting to Kidderminster is nice and straightforward. The A456 runs straight through town, linking it to Birmingham and Worcester, while the M5 and M42 aren't far away, giving access to the rest of the country. Kidderminster railway station has direct services to Birmingham Snow Hill and Moor Street, as well as Worcester and beyond. Local bus routes connect surrounding villages and towns, while Birmingham Airport is around 45 minutes away by car, offering a good range of domestic and international flights.
Worcestershire as a county is a real mix of town and country — rolling hills, orchards, market towns and bits of industry all sitting comfortably alongside one another. It's a place with centuries of history but plenty of modern life going on, from thriving businesses to countryside retreats. Whether you're hiking up the Malverns, walking the River Severn, shopping in Worcester or riding a steam train through Kidderminster, there's always something new just around the corner. And no matter where you go, that warm West Midlands welcome is never far away.
