Situated in West Sussex, Petworth is a quintessential British market town with a strong rural population, framed in beautiful, old stone buildings and antique shops. Petworth grew from its connection to Petworth House and the surrounding estate, with roots dating back to medieval times and a strong tradition of hospitality that is still evident in the historic streets and cottages that create the town's character. Today's population is approximately 3,000; however, on the weekends or during summer months, the number of visitors arriving to shop in the galleries, visit cafés, and explore the countryside makes the town seem much bigger than its current size. Petworth lies on two roads (A272 and A283), linking it to Midhurst, Pulborough and Billingshurst, with rail stations at Pulborough and Haslemere offering access to London and the south coast. The major attractions in Petworth are Petworth House and Deer Park, both of which attract art enthusiasts and walkers alike. Nearby are National Trust properties, including Uppark House and Nymans, and English Heritage properties Cowdray Ruins and Bramber Castle. Petworth is a town where antique collectors can be found with muddy boots strolling through the countryside followed by a stop for afternoon tea.
