Arundel Castle rises majestically above the River Arun, an unequivocal fixture of the South East's historic landscape due to the sight of not only its enormous stone walls but also its towers, gardens and overall appearance — it is so reminiscent of an English period film! This 11th century structure was built shortly after the Norman Conquest, and for hundreds of years has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk; indeed, the castle feels as if it is currently inhabited rather than permanently closed off behind velvet ropes. The town of Arundel has about 4,000 residents, however, on any given day throughout the year, the castle brings thousands of visitors into the area. The castle grounds, state rooms and gardens have a great deal of history, in addition to the rolling downs of the South Downs, the coast at Littlehampton and the wetlands at Pulborough Brooks, which also provide fun and relaxation for visitors. Arundel train station offers rail service connections between London, Brighton and Portsmouth trains; while the A27 and A29 provide easy access via road transportation. Some of the National Trust's notable properties near by Arundel Castle include Slindon Estate and Cissbury Ring, while many English Heritage visitors visit Amberley Castle and Boxgrove Priory.
