West Sussex’s Midhurst is a delightful Tudor market town nestled in the shadow of the South Downs National Park, which possesses expansive rolling hills, beautiful ancient woodland and picturesque winding country roads. The town was established in the Middle Ages and grew on the back of the main routes for travel through the River Rother, and even today boasts numerous original brick and timber buildings which give the town its character.

Midhurst has approximately 5,000 residents and, despite the many tourists that frequent the town, it is very clearly a working town with all the usual everyday activity found within its boundary, rather than a tourist town that has been made more appealing to visitors. The routes through the town are primarily designated as A272 and A286, which join Petersfield, Chichester and Haslemere; there are also mainline railway services connecting Midhurst to London and the southern coast.

The main attractions in the Midhurst area are the Cowdray Ruins and Cowdray Park, particularly during the summer when it is polo season, and all year round, thousands of people take advantage of the many walking paths that lead into the South Downs. The National Trust own and operate some of their best properties near Midhurst, such as Uppark House and Petworth House, while English Heritage operates some of their best sites, such as the ruins of Cowdray and the historic heart of Chichester.

All of these attractions make Midhurst a great place to enjoy a day out for many reasons, from fine quality antique shops, to welcoming pubs, to dusty walking boots on country roads.

We hope you found this Midhurst tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
