Launceston Cornwall (PL15): Launceston sits right on the eastern edge of Cornwall in South-West England, almost acting like a gateway between Cornwall & Devon, and it's one of those places that feels older than it looks at first glance. The town of Launceston grew around its Norman castle, which still dominates the skyline from the hilltop, so wherever you walk you are certain to keep catching glimpses of its stone walls and towers. Launceston is compact enough to explore on foot, with narrow streets, an array of little independent shops and the kind of cafes where nobody is in much of a rush.

The castle is the obvious starting point for a tour of the town, partly for the history and partly for the splendid views across the Kensey Valley, which really demonstrates just how rural the area still is. Just below this you will find the Southgate Arch and the old town walls, and from there the streets slope down towards the River Kensey where things get much quieter and greener. A gentle wander around the Lawrence House Museum will fill in the story of the town perfectly, especially the civil war history and local life from many centuries ago.

Launceston is best treated as a slow stop, rather than a packed sightseeing day, so you should give yourself time to browse the antiques shops and markets, then grab a bit of lunch at a local bakery or pub. It is also a handy base if you want to explore further, with Bodmin Moor just a short drive south, and the Tamar Valley right on the doorstep for walks or cycling. By late afternoon you will notice that the town settles into a calm rhythm, and that is really when it starts to feel really Cornish - peaceful, a bit timeless, and quietly proud of its past.
