Port Talbot is a tough and proud coastal town in South Wales, best known for its massive steelworks, strong community spirit and dramatic setting where the mountains drop straight into the sea. It's a place that wears its industrial heart on its sleeve, but there's more to it than just smoke and steel. From sandy beaches to hidden waterfalls, and with a surprising creative streak tucked into the valleys, Port Talbot is one of those towns that quietly keeps the wheels turning—and does it with real grit.
The town as we know it today came together in the early 20th century, formed by merging a cluster of villages and industrial settlements around Aberavon and Margam. Named after the Talbot family who were influential landowners in the area, Port Talbot rapidly became a major centre for steel production, a status it still holds today with Tata Steel dominating the local economy and skyline. While its history is steeped in industry, it's also home to one of Wales' most famous acting sons—Sir Anthony Hopkins grew up here. The town has a population of around 31,000, and while times have changed, its identity remains deeply rooted in hard work and community.
There are a few unexpected gems when it comes to attractions. Aberavon Beach is long, sandy and ideal for a blowy coastal walk, surf session or just a sit-and-watch-the-sea moment. It's backed by a prom with cafes, a skate park and a splash zone for the kids. The Princess Royal Theatre offers regular shows and performances, while the town centre has a decent mix of shops, eateries and pubs. Just outside town, Margam Country Park is a standout—miles of green space, a fairy-tale Victorian Gothic mansion, a deer herd, and adventure playgrounds. National Trust-wise, Aberdulais Tin Works and Waterfall is nearby, combining natural beauty with industrial history. There's also Neath Abbey ruins not far away, a proper spot for history lovers, and although not English Heritage, it's well worth a visit.
Zoom out a bit and West Glamorgan opens up into a mix of coast, forest and valley. Swansea's close by for shopping, nightlife and beaches, while Afan Forest Park, right on Port Talbot's doorstep, is brilliant for mountain biking and hiking. The Gower Peninsula is within easy reach too—cliffs, surf, coves and some of the best beaches in the UK. Inland, you'll find charming villages, hilltop walks and waterfalls like Melincourt and Henrhyd. The area blends industrial past with green renewal in a way that feels authentic, a bit raw in places, but always real.
Getting to Port Talbot is simple enough. It's bang on the M4 corridor, which connects it directly to Cardiff, Swansea and London. Port Talbot Parkway railway station offers regular services to Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, and London Paddington. Local buses link the town with nearby communities, and the coastal road gives great views while you drive. Cardiff Airport is the nearest for flights, about 40 minutes by car. The town itself is compact enough to get around on foot or by bike, and the beachfront path makes getting from one end to the other a breeze.
West Glamorgan, while no longer a formal county in administrative terms, still holds its place in the local mindset. It includes Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and surrounding valleys, all shaped by coal, steel and a deep connection to the land. From the rugged industrial edges of the south to the sweeping coastline of Gower and the wooded valleys inland, it's a region of contrasts. People here are grounded, straight-talking and full of local pride. There's a strong Welsh identity running through it all, from language and sport to music and a shared past that still shapes everyday life.
