Ross-on-Wye is one of those towns that just gets under your skin – in the best possible way. Perched on a hill above a dramatic loop in the River Wye, it serves up postcard views in almost every direction and has a relaxed, welcoming feel that makes visitors want to linger. With its jumble of independent shops, timber-framed buildings and riverside walks, it's the kind of place where you can lose track of time without even trying. The backdrop of rolling Herefordshire countryside doesn't hurt either, especially when it's soaked in golden evening light.

There's plenty of history woven through Ross-on-Wye's narrow streets. The town has been a market centre since the 12th century and developed a reputation for tourism long before most places knew what it was – back in the 18th century it was a favourite on the “Wye Tour”, a kind of early British version of the Grand Tour. The iconic Market House in the centre dates from the 1600s and still dominates the town square. The parish church of St Mary's has stood watch over the town for centuries, with its tall spire and peaceful churchyard offering some of the best views across the valley. The population now sits at just over 10,000, but it still feels like a proper community – one where the butcher knows your name and the local cafés always have a friendly word.

The town itself has plenty to keep you busy. There's the riverside walk down to The Hope and Anchor, perfect for a pint and a view. The Prospect Gardens behind the church offer wide-open spaces and big skies, while the independent shops and art galleries give the centre a creative, slightly bohemian vibe. Just outside town, you've got Goodrich Castle – an English Heritage gem perched high above the Wye. National Trust properties aren't far either – The Weir Garden is around half an hour north, and Westbury Court Garden just over the border into Gloucestershire makes for a cracking day out. Canoeing on the river is hugely popular, and if you fancy stretching your legs, Symonds Yat Rock is only a short drive and rewards you with sweeping views and maybe a glimpse of the peregrine falcons that nest there.

If you've got more time to explore, the rest of Herefordshire has plenty in store. Head north to Hereford itself for the cathedral and Mappa Mundi, or west towards Hay-on-Wye if bookshops and borderland walks are your thing. Ledbury's great for poetry, food and half-timbered architecture, while Leominster is full of antique shops and historic buildings. The Black and White Village Trail takes you through some of the most photogenic corners of the county, with stops like Weobley, Pembridge and Eardisland along the way. It's the kind of county where turning off the main road nearly always leads somewhere lovely.

Getting to Ross-on-Wye is easy enough by road. It's right on the A40 and A49, meaning Gloucester, Hereford and Monmouth are all within easy reach. The M50 connects directly into the motorway network, so it's surprisingly well-placed for such a peaceful spot. There's no train station in town, but Ledbury and Hereford are your best bets for rail, both around half an hour away by car or bus. For airports, Bristol is probably the handiest, though Birmingham and Cardiff aren't too far off either. Once you're in Ross, the town's small enough to get about on foot without any trouble.

Herefordshire itself is one of those counties that doesn't shout about itself, but once you've spent time there, it's hard to forget. It's got this mix of old farming landscapes, sleepy villages and pockets of creativity that make it feel timeless and alive all at once. The cider heritage runs deep, the food scene is growing steadily, and there's a general sense that life's best lived at walking pace. Whether you're here for the hills, the hedgerows, the history or just some headspace, Herefordshire has a knack for making people feel at home.

We hope you found this Ross-on-Wye tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
