Ashington sits firmly in the south-east corner of Northumberland, not far from the coast, with a proud industrial history and a real sense of community running through it. Once famous as one of the world's biggest mining towns, it's since reshaped itself into a modern town that still holds tight to its roots. These days, you'll find a mix of shops, green spaces and plenty of friendly locals, all backed by a rich story that's never far from the surface.

The town's rise came with the coal mines. Ashington grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, turning from a small village into a booming mining hub almost overnight. The mining industry may have disappeared by the 1980s, but its influence remains strong, not least in the famous Ashington Group – a bunch of pitmen painters whose work captured everyday life in the town. The county's coastline is packed with gems — Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island, Alnwick Castle and the Farne Islands are all well within reach. Head inland and you're into Northumberland National Park, full of big skies, rolling hills and endless walking trails. Hadrian's Wall offers miles of Roman history, while places like Cragside and Wallington Hall bring more grand houses and gardens to the list. Kielder Water & Forest Park rounds things off with its mix of outdoor adventure, cycling and dark sky stargazing.

Ashington's easy enough to get to. The A189 runs just outside town, linking straight into the A19 and A1 for travel north and south. The Northumberland Line is due to bring rail services back to Ashington, linking it directly to Newcastle, which will make things even easier for commuters and visitors. Until then, nearby Morpeth and Cramlington cover train services. Newcastle International Airport is around 30 minutes away by car, with buses running regularly into Newcastle, Blyth, Morpeth and the coast.

Northumberland as a whole is full of space, history and strong communities.
