Newbiggin-by-the-Sea sits quietly on the Northumberland coast, tucked between the busier stretches of Blyth and Amble, with a proper old-fashioned seaside charm about it. The long sweeping bay, soft sandy beach and iconic sculpture sitting out at sea give the place its own laid-back character. While it's smaller than some of its neighbours, Newbiggin's got plenty to offer for a peaceful day out or as a lovely place to call home, with the sea never far from sight or sound.
The town's history goes back centuries, originally growing as a fishing village long before it became a holiday spot. In medieval times, Newbiggin was one of Northumberland's main ports, with a steady trade in grain and fish. As coal mining developed inland, the town later became a small but busy colliery community, like so much of south-east Northumberland. Its sheltered bay made it a natural draw for Victorian visitors too, and it's held onto that resort feel ever since. Today, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea has a population of around 6,000, many of whom still have deep family ties to the town and its surrounding villages.
There's plenty to enjoy in and around Newbiggin. The beach and promenade are the main draws, perfect for a walk with sea views or a coffee while watching the waves roll in. Out in the bay sits Couple, a striking offshore sculpture by artist Sean Henry, which has become a local landmark. The Newbiggin Maritime Centre brings the town's fishing and coastal history to life, while the golf course offers lovely views over the bay. Just a short drive away you'll find National Trust's Seaton Delaval Hall with its dramatic Georgian architecture, and English Heritage's Warkworth Castle further up the coast, perfect for a day exploring Northumberland's medieval history.
Wider Northumberland opens up even more options. You've got the grand castles of Bamburgh, Alnwick and Lindisfarne further north along the coast, all offering stunning views and plenty of history. Head inland and you'll find Northumberland National Park with its rolling hills, peaceful valleys and endless walking routes. Hadrian's Wall and Roman forts like Vindolanda and Housesteads sit further west, while Cragside, Wallington Hall and Belsay Hall bring grand country houses into the mix. Kielder Water & Forest Park offers stargazing, cycling and wide open spaces.
Newbiggin's well placed for getting about. The A189 and A19 make road travel easy, linking to Ashington, Morpeth, Blyth and Newcastle. While Newbiggin doesn't have a train station, nearby stations at Morpeth, Cramlington and the soon-to-open Northumberland Line will improve rail access in the area. Newcastle International Airport is around 30 minutes away by car, making flights handy enough. Local buses run regularly into Ashington, Blyth, Newcastle and surrounding towns, keeping connections simple.
Northumberland itself is one of those counties that feels like a bit of a secret for those who don't know it well. Big skies, long beaches, castles everywhere you turn, and communities that still feel rooted to their past. Whether you're climbing castle towers, walking along quiet beaches, or tucked into a country pub after a walk, Northumberland's always got something quietly brilliant up its sleeve.
