Tucked away on the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight, Bembridge is a charming seaside village with a relaxed feel and a strong sense of community. It's known for its sailing scene, quiet beaches and the slightly old-fashioned charm that makes it feel like you've stepped back in time, just a little. Life here moves at a gentle pace, and there's no shortage of scenic walks, cosy pubs, and sea views at every turn.

The village has a long and storied past, going back to Roman times, though it really started to take shape in the 19th century when the harbour was developed and the area became popular with holidaymakers. At one time, it was even believed to be the largest village in England. These days, it has a population of around 3,000 residents, give or take, though that number swells a bit when the summer season kicks in. Its heritage as a fishing and seafaring spot is still evident, with the lifeboat station and working harbour continuing to play an important role.

Bembridge offers a mix of things to see and do, both in the village itself and a short hop beyond. The RNLI lifeboat station is a popular stop, especially when the crew's out for training. There's also Bembridge Windmill, a National Trust gem and the only surviving windmill on the island. Just outside the village, you've got Culver Down with its clifftop views, and nearby Brading Roman Villa, managed by English Heritage, is worth a look for anyone interested in ancient history. For a quiet wander, the nature reserve at Bembridge Marshes is ideal, especially for birdwatchers.

Stretching a bit further across the island opens up a treasure trove of attractions. Osborne House in East Cowes is a big one – Queen Victoria's former holiday home, packed with history and grandeur. Carisbrooke Castle is another highlight, sitting right in the middle of the island and offering a real glimpse into the island's turbulent past. There's also the Needles over on the western edge, plus plenty of family-friendly options like Blackgang Chine and Robin Hill. Whether you're into fossils, gardens, or theme parks, there's always something going on.

Getting to Bembridge takes a bit of planning, but it's far from difficult. There's no train station in the village, but you can get the Island Line train to nearby Brading or Ryde, then take a bus or taxi from there. The nearest car ferry terminals are in Fishbourne, Ryde and East Cowes. For those flying in, the closest airport is Southampton, with connections by train and ferry. Roads on the island are mostly rural, but you can drive from Newport to Bembridge in under half an hour. Once you're here, the village is very walkable, and there are regular bus services linking it with the rest of the island.

The Isle of Wight itself has a bit of everything—rolling countryside, sandy beaches, chalk cliffs, quirky little towns, and a calendar full of local festivals and events. It's technically a county in its own right, separated from the mainland by the Solent, and has a character that feels distinct from anywhere else in the UK. Farming, tourism and small-scale industry keep things ticking over, and there's a strong sense of local pride.
