Sandown sits on the southeast coast of the Isle of Wight and has long been a classic British seaside favourite. With its sweeping bay, long promenade and sandy beach, it's the sort of place that invites you to slow down, breathe in the salty air and just enjoy the view. There's a bit of something for everyone – families with buckets and spades, dog walkers along the clifftops, and visitors drawn in by the area's laid-back charm and retro character.

The town really came into its own in the Victorian era when the railway reached it, turning what was once a quiet coastal stretch into a bustling holiday spot. Its wide beach, gentle surf and stunning bay made it ideal for sea bathing, and it's stayed popular ever since. The population these days sits around 11,000, with the town continuing to thrive on tourism, local shops and its connection to nature and history. There's a sense of the old seaside magic here, mixed with some fresh energy from small businesses and community events.

Sandown's full of life, especially in the warmer months. You've got the traditional pier, amusement arcades, and beach cafés, but there's also the brilliant Dinosaur Isle Museum and Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, both big hits with families. A wander along the clifftop paths towards Shanklin is always a good idea, with sea views and hidden coves along the way. Just inland, you've got English Heritage's Carisbrooke Castle and the lovely gardens of Mottistone Manor, managed by the National Trust. Not far off is Bembridge Windmill too – small but packed with charm.

Elsewhere across the Isle of Wight, there's plenty more to explore. Head west and you'll find the dramatic chalk stacks of The Needles, or spend a day inland around Godshill or Arreton, with their thatched cottages and local craft shops. Osborne House near East Cowes is a big draw, with its regal gardens and royal connections, while the south side of the island has hidden gems like Ventnor Botanic Garden and Steephill Cove. You're never short of views or walking trails, and the wildlife's cracking too.

Getting to Sandown isn't tricky. You can hop on a ferry from Portsmouth, Southampton or Lymington to reach the island, and then it's either a short train journey on the Island Line or a drive across the island's winding roads. The nearest airport is Southampton, with rail links that connect up with the island's ferry terminals. The train from Ryde Pier Head to Sandown takes you right along the coast, with great views from your carriage. Buses are frequent and friendly, and it's small enough here that bikes and walking work just as well.

The Isle of Wight, as a county, is a world of its own – both in terms of pace and personality. Life moves slower, but in a good way. There's a strong local community spirit, a big love for its natural landscape, and a real pride in heritage. The island often feels like stepping back into simpler times, without ever feeling out of touch. It's that mix of coast and countryside, history and holiday fun, that keeps people coming back.
