Brighouse is one of those West Yorkshire towns that manages to strike a lovely balance between tradition and modern convenience. It sits snugly along the River Calder, not far from Halifax and Huddersfield, and has that easygoing vibe you only seem to get in smaller towns with big character. It's the sort of place where markets still thrive, locals know each other by name, and there's always something going on, whether it's a summer street party or a trip along the canal.
The town's roots go back centuries, but it really found its feet during the Industrial Revolution. Like many places in the region, it was powered by textiles and engineering, with mills cropping up alongside the Calder and Hebble Navigation. The canal played a huge role in shipping goods and bringing industry to life. Over time, Brighouse grew steadily, helped along by the railway and its prime location. These days, around 33,000 people call it home, and while much of the heavy industry has moved on, that strong sense of community and work ethic still lingers.
In terms of what to see and do, Brighouse punches above its weight. There's the market, which is still a lively draw for locals and visitors alike. The town hosts regular food and craft festivals that bring the streets to life with stalls, music and good cheer. You've got some cracking walks along the canal towpaths, and Wellholme Park is ideal for families or a quiet stroll. Not far away is Shibden Hall, a beautiful historic house linked to Anne Lister, and part of English Heritage's story-telling of Yorkshire's past. Oakwell Hall and East Riddlesden Hall are also close enough for a half-day visit, both National Trust properties with peaceful gardens and that proper old Yorkshire charm.
Wider West Yorkshire opens the door to even more. You're within easy reach of Leeds for shopping, dining and nightlife, or Halifax for The Piece Hall, Eureka! and the impressive Minster. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield is a breath of fresh air—art meets landscape in a way that's impossible to rush. Then there's the moors and valleys if you fancy heading out on foot or by bike—this part of the county doesn't disappoint when it comes to scenery.
Getting to and from Brighouse is fairly straightforward. The train station offers direct links to Leeds, Manchester, Bradford and beyond, making it ideal for commuters or day-trippers. It's also well-connected by road, with the M62 just a few minutes away, which puts both coasts within reach. There's no airport in the town itself, but Leeds Bradford isn't far—about 40 minutes by car or doable with a change or two on public transport.
West Yorkshire as a whole has that great mix of past and present. It's a county built on wool and coal, but now buzzing with creativity, food culture and arts. Whether you're wandering the arcades of Leeds, catching a show in Wakefield, or losing track of time in a quiet valley village, there's a rhythm to the place that keeps people coming back—or sticking around for good. It's gritty in bits, pretty in others, and real all the way through.
