Halifax is one of those towns that's full of character, tucked into the hills and valleys of West Yorkshire with a charm that's both industrial and quietly grand. You get the sense that it's been through a lot and come out the other side with its head held high. There's something satisfying about the stone buildings, the winding streets, and the way the place hums with local life. Whether you're after a bit of culture, a bite to eat, or just a wander through history, Halifax ticks plenty of boxes without making a song and dance about it.
Back in the day, Halifax was a booming centre of the wool trade. It really made its mark during the Industrial Revolution, churning out cloth and carving its place in the textile industry. That prosperity left its mark on the skyline—grand mills, imposing public buildings, and no shortage of Yorkshire grit. The Piece Hall, once a cloth market, is a perfect example of that legacy. The town's population is around 90,000 these days, and while it's moved on from the days of spinning and weaving, it's kept its sense of identity. There's pride in the past, but there's plenty going on in the present too.
The Piece Hall is the crown jewel, no question—a huge, open-air courtyard surrounded by elegant arches, now packed with indie shops, galleries, cafés, and events year-round. It's the kind of place you can happily lose an afternoon. Eureka! The National Children's Museum is brilliant for families, and Shibden Hall—linked to Anne Lister of Gentleman Jack fame—is just a short stroll away, with historic interiors and a cracking park. For National Trust fans, East Riddlesden Hall isn't too far, and if English Heritage is more your thing, Kirkstall Abbey near Leeds and the ruins of Spofforth Castle make for a good day out.
If you're up for exploring, West Yorkshire as a whole won't let you down. Leeds is under half an hour away by train, with all the shopping, eating and nightlife you could ask for. Bradford's close too, with its rich culture, grand architecture and brilliant curry scene. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, down near Wakefield, is well worth a visit, and Salts Mill in Saltaire combines art, history and books all under one impressive roof. For moorland views and literary vibes, head to Haworth and the Brontë Parsonage Museum—it's all fresh air and cobbles up that way.
Getting to Halifax is pretty easy. It's got its own railway station, linking directly with Leeds, Manchester, Bradford and other major spots. By car, it sits near the M62, which runs across the Pennines and makes it simple to get east or west. Buses run regularly in and out of the town centre, connecting it with neighbouring towns and villages. For air travel, Leeds Bradford Airport is your closest bet, just under an hour away, and Manchester Airport's not much further, especially if you're already heading that way on the train.
West Yorkshire's got a bit of everything—solid towns full of history, a creative buzz running through the cities, and countryside that pulls you out of the rush without asking much in return. There's a no-nonsense attitude in the people, but also a deep sense of place and community. You'll find old mill towns that have reinvented themselves, markets still holding their own, and green spaces where the past and present quietly overlap. It's a county that doesn't shout about itself—but doesn't need to.
