Chester Zoo is one of those rare places that appeals to just about everyone—families, nature lovers, day-trippers and even the odd romantic couple on a walk. Tucked into the north-west corner of Cheshire, just outside the city of Chester, it's more than just a zoo. It's a sprawling, beautifully landscaped conservation park with over 20,000 animals from every corner of the globe. With winding paths, carefully designed enclosures, and plenty of places to stop for a bite, it's easy to lose hours here without even realising.
It all began in 1931 when George Mottershead and his family opened the zoo with a clear mission—to keep animals in as natural and open an environment as possible, rather than the cages and bars that were common at the time. What started as a small collection has grown into one of the UK's leading conservation organisations, working on breeding programmes, wildlife protection, and education. The place has changed massively over the decades, with new habitats like Islands, Monsoon Forest and the Grasslands bringing animals closer than ever while still keeping their welfare front and centre.
The area around the zoo has plenty to keep you entertained. There's the Blue Planet Aquarium in nearby Ellesmere Port, ideal if you fancy switching from land animals to marine life. Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is just a short drive away for those in need of retail therapy, and there's a decent spread of family-friendly restaurants and hotels nearby. Countess of Chester Country Park is a lovely green space to stretch your legs, and the River Dee offers walking routes and boat hire for something a bit more peaceful. If you're staying in the area, there's a good range of places to suit all budgets—from spa hotels to cosy B&Bs.
Wider Cheshire is packed with options for day trips. The Roman city of Chester itself is a stone's throw from the zoo, with its historic walls, cathedral, and the famous Rows offering plenty to see. Delamere Forest's great for walking or cycling, and Tatton Park offers historic houses and deer-dotted grounds. Jodrell Bank Observatory brings a bit of science into the mix, while Beeston Castle is perfect for a clifftop walk with a bit of history thrown in. There's also the Anderton Boat Lift near Northwich, and Little Moreton Hall for some properly crooked Tudor architecture.
Getting to Chester Zoo is simple enough. It's just off the A41 and very close to the M53 and M56, so driving in is straightforward. There's plenty of parking on-site, and it's well signposted. The nearest train station is Chester, which is just a few miles away—grab a taxi or hop on one of the regular buses that run directly to the zoo. If you're flying in, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is the closest, about 30 minutes by car, while Manchester Airport is also within easy reach. Local buses and park-and-ride options make getting around hassle-free once you're there.
Cheshire's the kind of county that does a bit of everything without fuss. It's got the rolling countryside and rural beauty that you'd expect, but also buzzing towns, pretty villages and a rich seam of history running through it. The Roman influence in Chester is well known, but you'll also find medieval castles, canal-side pubs, modern science centres and enough farm shops to keep any foodie happy. It's a county that feels relaxed and settled, but it's always got something new to discover.
