Dinnington is one of those South Yorkshire towns that sits quietly doing its thing, tucked between Rotherham and Worksop, with Sheffield just a short run west. It's got a proper community feel, plenty of local shops and pubs, and sits right on the edge of some lovely countryside. It's a town that's seen change, weathered it, and come out the other side with its sense of identity still intact. Whether you're popping through or settling in, it's got that lived-in, down-to-earth charm that makes it feel familiar from the get-go.
The town has deep roots, going all the way back to the Domesday Book, when it was little more than a rural farming spot. It stayed small for centuries until the coal industry arrived, bringing with it a boom in population and industry. Dinnington Colliery opened in the early 1900s and shaped much of the town's growth until its closure in the ‘90s. Since then, the town's shifted from pit village to commuter hub, slowly modernising while still holding on to its heritage. These days, Dinnington has a population of around 9,000, and while it's part of the wider Rotherham borough, it's very much its own place with its own pace.
There's plenty in and around town to keep folk busy. Dinnington's high street is dotted with independents, charity shops, takeaways and a few recognisable chains. There's a weekly market, a good-sized park, and leisure facilities that give you space to get active. Just down the road you'll find Roche Abbey—an English Heritage site that's a peaceful spot for a wander, especially on a sunny day. National Trust properties aren't far off either—Clumber Park is a short drive away and makes for a cracking day out with woodlands, lakes and plenty of walking routes. If you're after something a bit livelier, Rother Valley Country Park is just over the hill with water sports, trails and open space for the whole family.
South Yorkshire more widely gives you a bit of everything. Sheffield's great for a city day out—indie cafés, leafy parks, music venues and proper northern hospitality. Rotherham offers Clifton Park and the ever-popular Magna Science Adventure Centre, while Barnsley gives you Cannon Hall and access to the Pennine edge. Doncaster brings the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, a solid town centre and the famous racecourse. You've also got the Peak District right on your doorstep, whether you're walking, climbing or just heading out for the view and a pub lunch somewhere scenic.
Dinnington's pretty well placed for getting around. The M1 is just a few miles away, and you've got easy road access to Rotherham, Sheffield and Worksop. There's no train station in town, but nearby stations at Kiveton Park and Kiveton Bridge link you into Sheffield, Lincoln and beyond. Buses run regularly into Rotherham and surrounding villages. For air travel, Leeds Bradford and East Midlands are your best options now that Doncaster Sheffield Airport has closed, both just over an hour's drive. Once you're in Dinnington, it's easy to get about on foot or by bike, and you're never far from a bit of green space.
South Yorkshire has this gritty charm to it that doesn't try to impress you—it just is what it is. It's made up of places like Dinnington that carry their own stories, shaped by industry, resilience and a strong sense of community. There's countryside in every direction, towns full of character, and cities that manage to feel friendly even when they're busy. You'll find working farms, old pit villages, reinvented high streets and plenty of open skies. It's that mix of old and new, hard work and soft edges, that makes South Yorkshire what it is.
