Doncaster is the sort of place that blends old and new without making a fuss about it. It's one of those Yorkshire cities that might not always shout the loudest, but it's got depth, history and a strong sense of itself. From its famous racecourse to its Roman roots, Doncaster feels proud but unpretentious. The city centre's got a good buzz, especially on market days, and there's no shortage of green spaces, shopping spots or places to grab a proper cup of tea. It's a place that's always evolving but still feels grounded.

Doncaster's been around for a long time—way back to Roman times when it was known as Danum. Its location made it important from early on, sat along key routes between London and the north. Over the centuries it's been a market town, a transport hub, and a heavyweight in the railway industry. That engineering legacy still lingers in the city's character. Doncaster was officially granted city status in 2022, and today the population sits at just over 87,000 in the city proper, though the wider borough includes many more. It's still a place shaped by industry, but also by resilience and reinvention.

There's plenty to get stuck into around town. Doncaster Racecourse is one of the oldest in the world and home to the famous St Leger Stakes—it's a real centrepiece of the local calendar. The city's markets are still thriving, especially the Corn Exchange, which brings a nice mix of old-school stalls and newer indie traders. The Frenchgate Centre handles your shopping fix, while the city's nightlife ranges from traditional pubs to lively bars and music venues. A short trip out takes you to Brodsworth Hall, a beautifully preserved Victorian house run by English Heritage, and Cusworth Hall with its lovely parkland. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is just down the road and well worth a visit, especially with kids in tow.

The rest of South Yorkshire opens up plenty of options if you're keen to explore. Sheffield's not far at all, offering galleries, green spaces and a thriving food and music scene. Head towards Barnsley and you'll find Cannon Hall and the peaceful beauty of the Pennine edge. Rotherham gives you Magna Science Adventure Centre and Clifton Park. The Peak District brushes the edge of the county too, with endless walks, hills and views that stop you in your tracks. Whether it's heritage, nature or just a decent pub in a new town, you've got a lot within easy reach.

Getting to Doncaster is one of its strong points—it's seriously well connected. The train station sits right on the East Coast Main Line, meaning you can get to London in under two hours and to cities like Leeds, York and Newcastle in no time. The A1(M) and M18 give strong road links, and buses connect the city to surrounding towns and villages pretty efficiently. Doncaster Sheffield Airport sadly closed in recent years, so now the nearest options for flights are Leeds Bradford, East Midlands or Manchester if you're travelling further afield. Still, for trains and road travel, Doncaster's hard to beat.

South Yorkshire as a whole has a personality all of its own. It's made up of working towns, big-hearted cities and countryside that often gets overlooked but has real charm. There's a gritty beauty in its industrial past, but the region doesn't live in the shadow of it. You'll find kindness, character and a stubborn pride that gives each place its own identity. From coal mines to country halls, street food stalls to grand theatres, it's all here—quietly brilliant, properly Yorkshire.
