Driffield is the kind of place that sneaks up on you—in the best way. Known as the Capital of the Wolds, this market town has a proper Yorkshire heart and plenty of rural charm to go with it. It's not showy, but it's welcoming, well-kept, and set in some of the most peaceful countryside you'll find in East Yorkshire. You've got all the essentials, a lively town centre and a weekly market that still pulls in a crowd. It's the sort of spot where people say hello in the street, and that counts for a lot these days.
There's been life in Driffield since way back—Roman times at least—and by the time it hit the Domesday Book, it was already an established spot. Its canal opened up in the 18th century, boosting trade and drawing folk in from the surrounding villages. Agriculture's always been the backbone here, with the Driffield Show still one of the biggest one-day agricultural events in the country. These days, around 14,000 people call the town home. There's a mix of old stone houses, Victorian terraces, and newer builds around the edges, with the town centre keeping its traditional look and feel.
For a town its size, Driffield's got plenty going on. There's a proper mix of shops and cafés, a couple of friendly pubs, and the canal adds something a bit different if you fancy a waterside walk. All Saints' Church towers over the centre and is well worth a look, and the showground often hosts events beyond the famous agricultural day. Not far out, you've got Sledmere House—a grand stately home with beautiful gardens—and the rolling Wolds countryside offers a cracking backdrop for walking, cycling or just a slow drive through the lanes. English Heritage sites like Wharram Percy are within easy reach, and the National Trust's Burton Agnes Hall is a favourite for those who like a mix of history, gardens and tea rooms.
Zoom out and East Yorkshire's packed with choice. Beverley's not far and makes for a brilliant day out with its minster, independent shops and racecourse. Hull's a bit further south with its museums, galleries and The Deep if you've got kids to entertain. The coast is calling too—Bridlington's only about half an hour away, and you've got Hornsea, Filey and even Scarborough if you're up for a longer run. The Yorkshire Wolds themselves are a big draw—quiet, green and full of character.
Getting to Driffield's easier than you might think. It's got its own railway station with direct services to Bridlington, Scarborough, Beverley and Hull, which links you into the national network. The A614 runs right past town, making road travel simple whether you're heading north to the coast or south towards the M62. If you're flying, Humberside's the nearest airport—around an hour's drive—and Leeds Bradford isn't much further if you need more options. Local buses link the town with surrounding villages, and once you're in Driffield, you can pretty much walk everywhere.
East Yorkshire has this unspoken calm about it. It's got hills, coastline, fields, and towns with proper personality, all without the crowds you'll find in better-known parts of the country. It's a county full of working farms, family businesses, and places that still run at a more human pace. People care about the place, and you can feel it in the way towns are kept tidy, and how the countryside always seems well looked after.
