Kingston-upon-Hull is a city with something of a surprise up its sleeve. Sitting right on the Humber Estuary, it mixes maritime grit with a fresh cultural energy—it's not flashy but it never feels dull. From its buzzing Deep waterfront, with boats bobbing on the water, to its redeveloped Old Town full of cobbled streets and murals, it's the sort of place where tradition and creativity seem to feed off each other. There's always a feeling that something's changing for the better without losing the soul that makes it Hull.

The city's history is woven into Britain's maritime past. Hull, officially Kingston upon Hull, started life in the 12th century as a key port, but it was the wool and later fish trades that shaped its fortunes. It suffered bombings in the Second World War, leaving scars that are still remembered today. That sense of resilience sticks around. Today, Hull is home to just under 260,000 people in the wider area. It might feel like it punches above its weight in arts, food and identity, but it's also a city that retains a strong sense of solidarity and local pride.

There's loads to enjoy in the city. The Deep aquarium is a proper showstopper and full of marine wonder. Nearby, the Museum Quarter brings together the Maritime Museum, Hull & East Riding Museum and the Arctic Corsair trawler docked close by. Humber Street in the Fruit Market district is where galleries, cafés, bars and boutiques rub shoulders with shipping containers and street art. The Hull Minster and Holy Trinity Church stand tall in the Old Town, alongside the cobbled lanes and independent shops. Hull's main theatre and concert venues bring regular shows, while the Ferens Art Gallery and Streetlife transport museum offer something for every interest. National Trust's Burton Constable Hall sits just outside the city, and English Heritage's Skipsea Castle and Wharram Percy aren't too far for a day trip.

East Yorkshire's buzz isn't limited to Hull. Beverley's historic Minster, markets and racecourse give it a lively personality, while lovely coastal towns like Bridlington offer beaches and fresh air. The Wolds roll inland with pretty villages, walking routes and countryside pubs. National Trust's Burton Agnes Hall and the clifftop spectacle of Bempton Cliffs are proper day-trip material. With Yorkshire Wolds villages and market towns nearby, the wider region has a gentle pace with plenty to reward exploration.

Getting around Hull's straightforward. The A63 and A1079 link the city to York, Leeds, Beverley and beyond, while the M62 heads east to the Humber Bridge and Lincolnshire. Hull Paragon station has regular services to Leeds, York, Manchester, and London. The city's airport is just north of town, with flights across the UK and Europe. Bus services cover most local areas, cycle routes are steadily improving, and the city centre is compact enough to explore on foot, especially around the marina and Old Town.

East Yorkshire is a mix of coastal breezes, market towns, mellow countryside and real community. It's less showy than some places but more meaningful if that makes sense. With Hull at its heart, the county carries a proud spirit, maritime history and warm welcome. The landscape here feels open but personal—farm fields and coastlines that go on for miles, but towns that never feel lost. It's the kind of county that grows on you.

We hope you found this Hull tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
