Livingston is a lively, modern town in the heart of West Lothian, halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It's a place that's grown quickly and confidently, known for its sprawling shopping centres, green spaces and a layout designed for community living. With a mix of housing, retail, schools and open parkland, Livingston has that “new town” feel but still holds onto a sense of identity and local pride. It's ideal for families, commuters and anyone who likes everything within easy reach.
Livingston was officially designated a new town in 1962, built to take pressure off Edinburgh's post-war population boom. It was developed around the original village of Livingston Station, with careful planning that separated residential, commercial and industrial zones while weaving in plenty of greenery. Since then, it's expanded rapidly and become West Lothian's largest town, home to over 60,000 people. The town has been shaped by industry, innovation and retail, but it's still evolving, with new developments and community projects continuing to pop up across the area.
Livingston has no shortage of things to do. The Livingston Designer Outlet is one of Scotland's biggest shopping destinations, packed with well-known brands, restaurants and a cinema. Next door, The Centre offers even more retail therapy, and there's everything from big chain stores to small independents. Almondvale Park and the River Almond run right through the town, providing quiet walking routes and picnic spots. Sports lovers can enjoy the facilities at Xcite Livingston or catch a match at Livingston FC. Nearby, the National Trust for Scotland's House of the Binns is a beautiful stately home with views over the Forth, while Linlithgow Palace—managed by Historic Environment Scotland—is just up the road and full of royal intrigue and dramatic ruins.
Beyond the town itself, West Lothian has plenty to offer. Linlithgow is full of history, with lochside walks and independent shops. Beecraigs Country Park offers forests, trails and play areas that make it a favourite with families and dog walkers. Cairnpapple Hill is a fascinating prehistoric site that shows how people lived here thousands of years ago. For a bit of adventure, the Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder is a big hit with kids, and if you're after peace and quiet, Polkemmet Country Park near Whitburn ticks all the boxes.
Livingston's transport links are one of its biggest strengths. There are two train stations—Livingston North and Livingston South—which both connect to Edinburgh and Glasgow, making it perfect for commuting. The M8 motorway is right nearby, and regular bus services run throughout the town and to surrounding areas. Edinburgh Airport is only about 20 minutes away by car, giving quick access to domestic and international flights. For getting around town itself, there are cycle paths, walking routes and a smart layout that keeps traffic fairly well managed.
West Lothian is a county that mixes town convenience with countryside calm. It stretches from the Pentland Hills to the Firth of Forth, with a good spread of towns, villages and rural spots in between. The area's history includes Roman roads, royal palaces and mining communities, and today it's known for being family-friendly, well-connected and full of green space. While it doesn't always shout about itself, there's a strong sense of community across the region, and a growing pride in everything it has to offer.
We hope you found this Livingston tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
