Paisley is a large town with a big personality, just west of Glasgow, known for its grand architecture, rich history, and of course, that famous patterned fabric. It's the kind of place where centuries-old buildings sit comfortably next to independent coffee shops and high street names, where students from the university mingle with lifelong locals, and where there's always something going on. With a blend of culture, creativity and that familiar Scottish warmth, Paisley has a real sense of identity and pride.
The town's history goes back to early Christian times, but it truly began to flourish in the 12th century with the founding of Paisley Abbey. The Industrial Revolution turned Paisley into a thriving textile hub, best known for its distinctive shawls and the teardrop-shaped Paisley pattern that spread worldwide. The town played a huge role in Scotland's manufacturing heritage, and many of the old mills and warehouses have been repurposed, giving the place a slightly gritty, artsy edge. Today, Paisley has a population of around 79,000 and continues to grow, with regeneration projects bringing new life into the centre.
There's no shortage of things to see and do around town. Paisley Abbey is a real showstopper, with gothic arches, stained glass, and centuries of history to explore. The town centre is dotted with interesting buildings like the Coats Memorial Church, the Russell Institute, and the Art Deco town hall. The Paisley Museum and Central Library are undergoing a huge renovation, set to turn them into a major cultural hub. Not far off is the National Trust's Greenbank Garden, a peaceful spot with formal gardens and woodlands near Clarkston. While English Heritage doesn't operate in Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland looks after nearby sites like Crookston Castle, and further afield you've got Dumbarton Castle perched dramatically above the Clyde.
Wider Renfrewshire brings its own set of attractions. The Gleniffer Braes country park offers walking trails with cracking views back across the Clyde valley, while Castle Semple Loch is ideal for sailing, paddleboarding or just feeding the ducks. Johnstone and Renfrew have their own local charm, and there are a good few golf courses and historic estates dotted about for those wanting something a bit more laid-back. If you're into shopping, Braehead and Silverburn aren't far and offer all the big names under one roof.
Getting to and around Paisley is pretty straightforward. The town has several train stations, with Paisley Gilmour Street being the main hub—it links directly to Glasgow Central in under 15 minutes, and there are regular services to Ayr, Gourock and Wemyss Bay. Buses run all over, and the M8 motorway runs just to the north of town, so getting around by car is easy. Glasgow Airport is right next door, barely five minutes away by taxi or bus, making it one of the best-connected towns in Scotland when it comes to travel.
Renfrewshire itself is a place that balances industrial heritage with rolling countryside and modern life. Towns like Renfrew, Johnstone and Erskine each have their own stories, while the rural stretches offer quieter corners and village charm. It's a county with a strong identity—shaped by shipbuilding, textiles and trade—but it's also growing and changing, with new housing, businesses and investment breathing fresh life into old spaces. The people are welcoming, the accent's thick, and the community spirit is still going strong.
