Tealby is a postcard-perfect village tucked into the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, where the hills start to rise gently and the pace of life slows down. With its stone cottages, rolling countryside and a pub that looks like something from a film set, it's the kind of place that makes you want to lace up your boots and breathe in the air. It's peaceful, welcoming and full of character—ideal for walkers, history lovers, and anyone who just wants to get away from the noise for a bit.
The village is steeped in history, with roots going back to Saxon times, and it's mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name “Tavelesbi.” Over the centuries, it's remained a small rural settlement, centred around farming, estate land and tight-knit community life. In the 19th century, it became part of the Bayons Manor estate, which once stood nearby in all its gothic splendour before falling into ruin. Today, Tealby has a population of around 600 and still carries that lovely old-world feel, where neighbours know each other and traditions are gently kept alive.
At the heart of the village is All Saints' Church, known as one of the oldest stone churches in Lincolnshire. Just around the corner is the King's Head—said to be the oldest thatched pub in the county—which serves hearty food and a cracking pint. There's a tearoom, a village shop, and a community hall that often hosts music and theatre. The Viking Way footpath runs right through Tealby, making it a hotspot for ramblers, and just outside the village you'll find Willingham Woods—brilliant for cycling, dog walks and a breath of fresh air. Not far off is the National Trust's Gunby Hall and Tattershall Castle managed by English Heritage—both within easy driving distance and well worth the visit.
Across Lincolnshire, there's loads to explore. Lincoln itself is just over half an hour away, with its incredible cathedral, castle and cobbled streets full of independent shops and cafés. Market Rasen is the nearest town and has its own charm with a racecourse and a traditional high street. Further out, you've got places like Louth and Horncastle, known for antiques, food markets and friendly atmospheres. The coast is a bit further but still reachable for a day out—Mablethorpe and Sutton-on-Sea offer a proper stretch of sand and sea breeze.
Tealby is off the beaten track but surprisingly accessible. It's just a few miles from the A46, which links it to Lincoln and Grimsby. Market Rasen is the nearest railway station, offering connections to Lincoln, Nottingham and beyond. There's no airport on the doorstep, but Humberside is about 40 minutes away by car, and East Midlands and Doncaster Sheffield are both within a couple of hours. Local buses run to Market Rasen and other nearby villages, though many visitors tend to drive and park up for the weekend.
Lincolnshire is one of those counties that doesn't need to shout about what it offers. It's wide open, quietly beautiful, and full of places that still feel grounded in their own history. You'll find landscapes that range from the windswept coast to the high ridges of the Wolds, with farms, market towns and hidden gems in between. Life here is steady, seasonal and full of heart. Whether you're exploring a medieval church, tucking into local cheese or watching hares dart through a field, there's something about Lincolnshire that stays with you.
