Woodhall Spa is one of those places that catches you off guard—in a good way. Tucked away on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, it's a former Edwardian spa town that's managed to keep much of its charm while moving with the times. Think tree-lined avenues, old-fashioned tearooms, and a sense of calm that feels like it belongs to another era. It's a favourite with walkers, cyclists, families and history buffs, but really, anyone who enjoys a slower pace of life will feel right at home here.

The town's rise began in the early 19th century when a shaft drilled in search of coal struck mineral-rich water instead. Before long, it became a spa destination, attracting visitors keen to bathe in the therapeutic waters. The spa is long gone now, but the village grew around it and never lost its elegance. During the Second World War, it was home to 617 Squadron—the Dambusters—and that history still plays a big role in the town's identity. These days, the population hovers around 4,000, and while it stays fairly peaceful, summer weekends can see a fair few visitors drifting through the town's leafy streets.

One of the standout attractions is the famous Kinema in the Woods, a charming little cinema that's been operating since 1922 and still uses rear projection. Jubilee Park offers a lovely outdoor swimming pool in the summer months, perfect for families. There are golf courses, woodland walks and plenty of cafés and boutiques to potter around in. The Cottage Museum gives a glimpse into the town's rich local history, while nearby you've got National Trust's Tattershall Castle and English Heritage's Bolingbroke Castle—both offering a mix of history and beautiful scenery. Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre is also just a short drive away, filled with wartime memorabilia and stories from the RAF days.

Across Lincolnshire you'll find an open, diverse landscape full of surprises. Lincoln itself, with its magnificent cathedral and castle, is about 30 minutes away. There's Louth, with its food markets and pretty town centre, or Boston, known for its historic church and riverside setting. The coast isn't far either—Skegness and Sutton-on-Sea offer that traditional British seaside feel, while the salt marshes and quieter beaches around Theddlethorpe are ideal for peaceful getaways and nature watching.

Getting to Woodhall Spa is relatively easy by road. It's nestled between the A158 and A153, making it handy whether you're coming from Lincoln, Horncastle or Boston. There's no train station in town, but Metheringham and Lincoln offer rail links to the rest of the country. If you're flying in, East Midlands and Humberside airports are both within reasonable reach by car. Buses run from Lincoln and surrounding towns, and it's a popular stop for cyclists following the Water Rail Way and Viking Way trails.

Lincolnshire as a county is wonderfully low-key, with a lot of beauty hidden in plain sight. It's the kind of place where you can drive for miles through open countryside without seeing another car, where the coastline runs on for days, and where ancient churches and market squares are just part of the everyday backdrop. It's not loud or brash—it's generous, rooted in tradition, and full of quiet confidence. Whether you're into wildlife, walking, history or just being somewhere a little less crowded, it's got something special.
