Thetford - Tucked away in the Breckland district of Norfolk, Thetford is a historic market town that manages to blend rural charm with plenty of local life. It sits on the edge of Thetford Forest, one of the largest lowland pine forests in the country, and is known for its mix of ancient roots, natural beauty, and friendly character. While it's not a huge place, it's big enough to have everything you need, and it's got a certain unhurried feel that's typical of this part of East Anglia.

Thetford's story goes way back. Once a major stronghold during the Saxon period, it was one of the largest towns in England at the time of the Domesday Book. Over the centuries, it grew as a religious and trading hub, with Thetford Priory being one of the town's standout medieval landmarks. The town later became known for its links to Thomas Paine, a political thinker who was born here in 1737. These days, Thetford has a population of just under 25,000, with a mix of long-time locals and newcomers who've been drawn in by its greenery and easygoing pace.

There's plenty to keep both locals and visitors busy. Thetford Forest is the big draw, with walking and cycling trails, Go Ape, and loads of open space for picnics or a bit of wildlife spotting. The Ancient House Museum offers a glimpse into Tudor life, while Thetford Priory remains, managed by English Heritage, provide a striking backdrop for a stroll. Just outside town, you've got National Trust gems like Oxburgh Hall and Ickworth House within easy reach, both well worth a wander. Grimes Graves, also under English Heritage care, is an unusual Neolithic flint mine that's fascinating to explore.

Wider Norfolk is packed with things to see and do. From the winding streets of Norwich, with its castle, cathedral and independent shops, to the sweeping Norfolk Broads where you can hire a boat and drift the day away, the county's full of surprises. Head to the coast for wide beaches, traditional seaside towns like Cromer, or the haunting beauty of places like Blakeney and Wells-next-the-Sea. Nature lovers will feel right at home with RSPB reserves, while history buffs have their pick of stately homes and ancient churches.

Getting to and from Thetford's fairly straightforward. The A11 cuts right past the town, linking it directly with Norwich one way and Cambridge the other, and it's now dualled all the way so it's a smooth run. Thetford railway station sits on the line between Norwich and Cambridge, with regular trains in both directions and connections on to London and the Midlands. Norwich Airport's about 30 miles off, and Stansted's not too far either if you don't mind a bit of a drive. Local buses connect the surrounding villages, and it's all well set up for drivers and cyclists alike.

Norfolk's a largely rural county, full of open skies, winding roads, and unspoilt landscapes. It's a place where life still moves at a slightly gentler pace, and community means something. While it's best known for the Broads and its north coast, inland towns like Thetford give you a different feel – part forest, part history, part small-town heart. It's a county that balances tradition with quiet progress, and it has a knack for drawing people back time and again.
