Totton sits on the edge of the New Forest, just west of Southampton, and has long been known as a bit of a gateway to both the countryside and the city. It's one of those places where you’ve got the best of both worlds—quiet green spaces, good local amenities, and quick access to the coast or the motorway if you need to get anywhere in a hurry. It’s grown over the years but still feels down-to-earth and friendly, with plenty going on if you know where to look.

Historically, Totton was a small village with its roots in farming and timber. Its location by the River Test made it a natural crossing point and trading spot, and with time it grew into a key area for industry—especially with the rise of shipbuilding and milling in nearby Southampton. In the 20th century, Totton expanded quickly with housing developments and local businesses popping up to support the growing population. These days, it’s considered one of the larger towns in the New Forest district, while still keeping a local, lived-in character.

Around town, there’s a solid mix of everyday essentials and little local gems. Totton Precinct is at the heart of things, with shops, banks, cafés and takeaways all within easy reach. There’s a leisure centre with swimming and fitness facilities, a library, and several schools dotted about. Testwood Lakes nature reserve is close by, offering peaceful walks and wildlife spotting. And for a bit of community spirit, the town hall and civic centre keep things ticking over with regular events, markets and groups.

Step just outside Totton and you’ve got the whole of Hampshire to explore. The New Forest National Park is right on your doorstep, full of trails, open moorland, and the occasional pony wandering across the road. Drive a little further and you’re into Winchester with its cathedral and historic streets, or down to Portsmouth for maritime museums and a proper seaside feel. There’s plenty of coastline, forest, history and countryside packed into this part of the county, making it a great base for exploring.

Getting to and from Totton is pretty straightforward. The town has its own train station, with direct links to Southampton, Romsey, Salisbury and London. The A35 and M271 are close by, so road connections are decent whether you’re heading into the New Forest or back towards the city. Local buses run regularly, and if you’re flying, Southampton Airport is about 20 minutes away, which is handy for trips across the UK or Europe.

Hampshire as a county offers a lovely mix of city life, rural peace and coastal charm. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the morning walking a forest path and the afternoon browsing shops or watching the boats. From the chalk streams of the Test Valley to the naval heritage of Portsmouth, Hampshire is rich in history, nature and community. It doesn’t shout about itself, but it’s got a lot to offer if you’re paying attention.
