Marwell Zoo is a brilliant spot for a family day out, set in the rolling countryside just outside Winchester. It's a peaceful place with a real focus on wildlife and conservation, offering the chance to get up close to everything from giraffes and tigers to penguins and red pandas. There's plenty of space to roam, and it never feels too crowded, which is a nice bonus. Whether you're with kids, friends or just fancy a slow wander somewhere green, it's well worth a visit.
The zoo opened in 1972, founded by Dr John Knowles, who wanted to create a place where endangered species could be bred and protected. Set on the grounds of the old Marwell Hall estate, the zoo was one of the first in Europe to take conservation seriously, and that ethos still runs through everything they do. Over the years, it's grown in size and reputation, playing a part in breeding programmes for animals that are disappearing in the wild, and supporting conservation efforts both here in the UK and overseas.
There's loads to see once you're inside. The Energy for Life Tropical House is a highlight, filled with butterflies, birds and the odd sloth if you can spot it. You've also got the Wild Explorers area, the snow leopard enclosure, the lemur loop, and all sorts of other habitats dotted across the 140-acre park. There are a couple of good cafés and kiosks, picnic areas if you've brought your own, and decent play zones for little ones to let off steam. It's easy to get around, with wide paths and lots of space to stop and watch the animals.
Beyond the zoo itself, Hampshire's full of places to explore. Winchester is just up the road, with its ancient cathedral and winding backstreets. If you're in the mood for countryside, the South Downs National Park is nearby, or head in the other direction for the New Forest, where ponies roam free and walking trails stretch for miles. Down on the coast, Southampton and Portsmouth both offer a mix of shopping, maritime history and places to eat by the water.
Getting to Marwell Zoo is fairly straightforward. It's just off the B2177 between Colden Common and Bishop's Waltham, with free parking on site. The nearest train stations are Eastleigh and Winchester, both a short taxi ride away. If you're flying in, Southampton Airport is only around 15 minutes up the road. Buses do run to nearby villages, but for ease, driving is usually your best bet. Once you're there, the layout's simple, and it's all geared towards making the day run smoothly.
Hampshire itself is a lovely part of the world. You've got coast, countryside, and culture all packed into one county. From Jane Austen's house in Chawton to the naval history in Portsmouth, there's a strong sense of place wherever you go. Market towns, country pubs, scenic walks—it's all here, and it's all easily reached. Whether you're into wildlife, castles, coastlines or just a cream tea in a quiet spot, Hampshire delivers without trying too hard.
